I remember waking up and turning the television before getting ready for Kindergarten.  Every morning I watched the Raising of the Flag on broadcast tv.  The national anthem would play as the flag shown in the morning sun.  It was easier to learn songs at 5 yrs old hearing them daily.  I also remember saying the Pledge of Alligents before class would start and a flag hanging in every class room.  When I turned 12 it started to seem taken less serious and the teacher would lead and u could say it if you wanted to.  High School offered no opportunities except on Flag Day.  Our children are not being reminded enough what that flag stands for and general patriotic respect.  I went to  a graduation the other day and groups of people were still walking around and chatting while the national anthem was sung for the ceremony.   I was dumbfounded at the lack of respect given through out the whole ceremony.  I think it would be wonderful for the raising of the flag to be aired again, especially for all those soldiers who we wish were home, those who never made it back, and for those who are leading them.

Do you remember spelling? You might have trouble getting people to read this heart-felt sentiment if you mis-spell the headline.

Patriotism and The Pledge of Allegiance would be a good start. Personally, I'd rather have my kids focused on spelling rather than blankly swearing their fidelity to an entity that barely pays the bills for the classroom that they are pledging in.
As for people's attention to to finer details of ceremony, we are lucky if people are simply respectful of eachother. I am afraid that you have touched on a broader cultural topic. We live in a society that at large has given up on civilty and ceremony. This is indead unfortunate.
