In the past few months, I have been finding a plethora of articles that focus on random acts of violence (fights, stabbings, shootings, whatever), robberies, and other related content. Many of the offenders are caught, which is good to say I suppose, but when they are asked, “Why did you do it?” they respond, “Because of video games!”
Sure, that is something I could expect a kid to say, but grown adults are laying down this excuse now to make up for why they decided to rob a bank or steal an old lady’s car at knife point. Now, of course, the subject of whether or not video games are causing an increase in aggression is sort of in the grey area, but I do not personally believe that video games are suddenly causing this surge of “violence” around the world. Crimes have been happening since the dawn of man. Cain didn’t bash Abel to death because he logged too many hours on Grand Theft Auto.
The point of it is that violence is an absolute. It’s not going to be cured by pointing the finger at video games. I think people just need to own up and take responsibility for their actions. Saying a video game made you do it is no different then saying the voices in your head made you do it. Its nuts and I think it’s just a cop out. People simply pointing their finger at other people in hope of taking the heat off of them. Why did that man rob a bank? Because he wanted the money! Not because a video game inspired him to do so. Simple Logic!
Anyway, leave a comment or write me at FaceofFox@kasa.com and let me know what you think. Until then, I’m going to go play Tetris.
